popSmarts really is smart! It knows which popus to keep and which ones to block. Other popup killers rely on elaborate blacklist/whitelist information that you have to set up! Birnam Labs created popSmarts to eliminate annoyances, and we thought that was one of them! popSmarts doesn't require any setup before using!

Many sites do have useful popup windows -- they aren't all ads! Other popup killers require you to click twice to open a desired link, or hold down the shift or ctrl keys when you click a desired link. popSmarts doesn't require you to alter your normal surfing habits at all, and allows you to open a link to a new window without any additional steps. popSmarts also allows you to use Internet Explorer's standard methods to open a regular link in a new window, by either holding down the shift key while clicking a link, or by selecting "Open In a New Window" from the context menu opened on the link.

As with any good intelligent software, popSmarts can be taught to perform even better! Using the whitelist and blacklist features, you can create rules for popSmarts to follow, allowing you to further refine or modify popSmarts' existing behavior. Rules can be added manually, or can be generated automatically using the information that is retreived from blocked popups.

When a popup is blocked by popSmarts, an icon is created to represent that popup window and is displayed in a configurable list in the main popSmarts window. If the popup window was mistakenly blocked, the window can be easily recreated by double-clicking on the icon!

popSmarts (unless configured otherwise) will only download the bare minimum of a popup window's data to retreive enough information to be able to re-create it. This means your browser doesn't have to load images, flash movies, active-X controls, or other bandwidth-hogging data that might appear in the popup window, and can greatly reduce the bandwidth created by a popup window, leaving your internet connection free for information you really wanted!

All popSmarts activity is recorded in a log, and can be viewed at any time. popSmarts comes with several options that allow you to configure the size of the log and how it treats new data.

Many websites use flash movies to generate desired popup windows. In order to open the window from flash, the movie must pass a script to the browser that defines the new window. Most popup killers see this script as an automatic, unwanted popup window, and will block it! popSmarts is smart enough to recognize when a user is navigating from a flash movie, and won't interfere with your surfing!

Unlike many other popup killers, popSmarts utilizes a complete, friendly, and easy to use user-interface that integrates directly into Internet Explorer. Other popup killers exist separate from the browser, in the windows tray (on the task bar, next to your clock), and others exist as cramped and confusing toolbars. Tray-driven applications lack intuitive controls because they aren't even part of the browser, and a user has to switch back and forth from the browser window to the tray icon to interact with the application. Toolbar-driven applications confuse users by trying to cram too many functions into a very limited space -- toolbars should not be used to house an entire user-interface! The popSmarts interface attaches itself into the Internet Explorer window, and contains a full, graphic interface while never having to leave the browser! The interface can be stretched as large as is necessary, or can be minimized so that it takes up no more room than the status bar!

Other popup killers use BHO technology (Browser Helper Object), but this technology allows a program to run automatically even if you can't see it. BHOs can be adware, spyware, or even a computer virus. A virus using BHO technology can completely destroy your computer! Some experts recommend using the Internet Explorer option to turn off all 3rd party applications. This won't affect popSmarts, which uses the much safer Explorer Bar technology. Birnam Labs recommends using BHOCop to choose which BHOs you want to run, and which you want deleted.
